Lenovo ThinkPad X120e Review: AMD Fusion Infused

It’s good to see that AMD’s Fusion technology is finally shipping. The convergence of the CPU and GPU has been looming for some time now, and while there have already been a few CPU / GPU hybrids available form the likes of Intel, the thought of having another low-power, economical to produce, cutting edge CPU / GPU combo on a mobile platform is particularly exciting.

Fusion bakes the CPU and GPU into one single piece of silicon, and while we have already reviewed the E-350 APU by its lonesome, we’ve been patiently waiting for a system maker to integrate the chip into a retail-ready notebook. Lenovo has become one of the first to do it, offering two major builds of the ThinkPad X120e: a $399 build with the E-240 APU, and a $579 build with the E-350 APU, 4GB of RAM and a roomy 320GB (7200RPM) hard drive. Both use an 11.6″ display and ship with Windows 7. Here’s a look at our review rig, which was the higher-end of the two:

Lenovo LePad Tablet to Launch Worldwide in June

The Lenovo LePad tablet will, following a release in China, ship abroad, a spokesperson reportedly confirmed. Though a U.S. debut still isn’t a definite.

Lenovo reportedly plans to sell its LePad tablet worldwide in June after an initial launch in China, though it’s unclear which markets it will be headed for and whether the United States will be included.

In the Feb. 17 report, PC World quoted Jay Chen, a spokesperson for the company, as the source of the information.

The fourth-largest PC maker worldwide, Lenovo introduced the Android-running LePad—modeled after its LePhone—in July 2010 with the promise of a launch before the end of the year. The company put the brakes on that launch, however, and at the Consumer Electronics Show in January showed off the LePad again with its hybrid IdeaPad U1, saying the pair would be available in China during the first quarter of 2011, but again offering no specifics on a U.S. launch.

The Thinkpad Dock team are really excited about this IdeaPad Innovation and will be posting the latest upto informtion on Posterous as soon as it is available.

Lenovo IdeaPad V460 Review

Build and Design
The IdeaPad V460 has a stylish professional look which is at home in nearly any environment. The chassis and lid are covered in finely brushed aluminum, which not only feels great, but adds strength. The V460 weighs in at 4.85 lbs, which is slightly more than usual for a 14-inch notebook. The chassis is relatively thin with an average height of about one inch. The V460’s build quality is above average for its price range. Grabbing the two front corners of the chassis and twisting produces minimal flex. The chassis surface is rigid and does not bend under pressure thanks to the aluminum.

Ports and Features
The V460 has an average selection of ports. An ExpressCard slot is included though it lacks USB 3.0 and eSATA.

Front: Wireless on/off switch

Back: Battery pack

Left: Kensington lock slot, VGA, heat exhaust vent, HDMI, Ethernet, 2x USB 2.0, microphone and headphone jacks

Right: ExpressCard/34 (top), 4-in-1 card reader (bottom), DVD burner, USB 2.0, AC power jack

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e Reviewed: Long Battery Life In A Small Package

The 11.6-inch Lenovo ThinkPad X120e is the successor to last year’s X100e and bests that system in about every category. While it has the same design as the ThinkPad X100e, the fine-tuning Lenovo has done under the hood really set the two apart. For starters, the X120e will keep going almost all day. It lasted about 6 hours on a charge; an hour longer than its predecessor and over 30 minutes longer than the category average. But don’t worry about that battery weighing you down, as it weighs just 3.4 pounds. Despite it’s diminutive stature, the X120e packs in a decent amount of graphics prowess– in addition to its long battery life– thanks to the new AMD Fusion platform, which pairs Radeon graphics with a dual-core processor on one chip.

While we found the notebook to be solid overall, we did run into issues with the video drivers, which hampered HD video playback. We are currently working with Lenovo to resolve these issues and will update our review when they’re resolved.

Lenovo ThinkPad X120e – Launch March 8th 2011 – Video exclusive

http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x120e/4505-3121_7-34498277.html

The good: AMD E-350 CPU offers long battery life; solid graphics; excellent keyboard; compact, professional ThinkPad design.

The bad: Throwback rubberized trackpoint eats up valuable space; battery bulge; heavy chassis; more expensive than some other AMD Fusion systems.

The bottom line: The AMD Fusion-powered ThinkPad X120e is an 11-inch ultraportable that’s better and more affordable than last year’s model, making it an even better choice for small-business buyers.

A new wave of AMD Fusion processors aimed at 11.6-inch ultraportables is making its way into Netbook-size laptops, promising a new generation of tiny, well-powered budget super-Netbooks. Stick one into a ThinkPad design, and you have the ThinkPad X120e, an update to last year’s ThinkPad X100e (which had AMD’s Neo processor).

Smart phone market overtakes PC – we all knew it and its happened

2010 sees greater volumes of phone shipments for the first time

The shipments and market share of smart phone, PC, and mobile phone vendors have been announced, revealing that smart phones overtook PC shipments for the first time last year.

In the final quarter of 2010, approximately 101 million smart phones were shipped compared to just 92 million PCs. The smart phone market has been rapidly growing in the last few years, most noticeably since the launch of iPhone in 2007.

While Nokia kept hold of the largest Smartphone market share, Apple stands firm in second, despite only having two phones on the market. Apple also remains the fifth biggest mobile phone vendor.

HP have the largest market share of PC’s closely followed by Dell, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba. It is now worth watching the tablet market, as it is expected to grow in similar fashion to smart phones as more products emerge.

Lenovo reportedly sees 3.3 million downloads from its online application store – Absolutely amazing

China-based PC vendor Lenovo’s online mobile applications store has attained 3.3 million downloads since the opening of the store in September 2010, averaging 25,000 downloads a day, according to China-based media reports.

The cumulative download volume is attributable to the selling of Lenovo smartphone series LePhone, the reports indicated. With 1,852 applications available for download at present, Lenovo currently cooperates with about 4,000 individual developers and about 700 software development companies for supply of applications, the reports pointed out. Among applications, video, games, navigation, mobile payment, mobile advertising and social networking will have relatively large market potential, the reports cited Lenovo as saying.

In addition to LePhone, Lenovo will launch its tablet PC series LePad at the end of the first quarter of 2011, the reports noted.
